Carpal tunnel release is one of the most common nerve compression syndromes in the upper limbs. It is a very common condition and occurs in about 2% of the population. It is six times more common in ladies than it is in gentlemen. It is a syndrome of middle age but can occur in the younger age group, especially in pregnant ladies. The most common cause of the condition is idiopathic (this term means we don't know what the cause is!). There are other causes, such as following wrist trauma such as wrist fractures, inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and tenosynovitis. There are metabolic causes such as pregnancy and patients with low thyroid hormone and diabetes. It occurs in wrist arthritis and sometime benign tumours such as ganglions in the carpal tunnel.http://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/health/132161/Dr-Jeremy-Field--consultant-hand-surgeon--on-carpal-tunnel-syndrome
