Intersection Syndrome (cross-over syndrome)

Operation

Cross-over syndrome or intersection syndrome is caused by the muscles in the base of the thumb crossing over some of the muscles that pull the wrist back. Surgery is rarely needed for this condition and this is generally treated non-operatively

Anaesthetic

General or regional anaesthetic.

Operative procedure

A cut is made over the tender area over the back of the wrist. It is extended a little bit more towards the back of the wrist. A cut is made over a tunnel through which the tendons that pull the wrist back is made (2nd dorsal extensor compartment) as it is thought this is to be the ??? that is problematical rather than the actual muscles crossing over the tendon.

Post-Operatively

Bulky bandage applied. A sling is worn for two days. The bulky bandage is to be maintained for two weeks. It is then removed and gentle mobilisation started thereafter.

Return to work

Return to work after four weeks.
