Phalangeal fractures

There are three phalanges in the finger and each of these can be damaged and the fractures can be similar to the metacarpal fractures. The fractures can be transverse (quite stable), oblique or spiral (unstable). With the later two there is tendency for shortening and rotation of the fingers. If there is shortening or rotation this would indicate an operation to try and restore the anatomical alignment of the bones.
